General description of Istanbul City Tour (Full Day)
The Jewels of Constantinople Tour offers the perfect introduction to the legendary city that spans Asia and Europe. On this full-day sightseeing tour, you’ll see the old and the new as you visit Istanbul’s four “must-see” historical sites.
Formally called Constantinople, Istanbul was the capital of the Roman Empire, and the richest metropolis in Europe. It is now the largest city in Turkey.
Blue mosque
One of the most famous monuments in the Turkish and Islamic world, is the Sultan Ahmet Mosque (also known as the Blue Mosque). It is an excellent creation in the classical Ottoman style. The mosque has six towering minarets and 260 windows that illuminate its vast main chamber. It is decorated with more than 20,000 Iznik tiles.
Istanbul Hippodrome
The Hippodrome; the stadium of ancient Byzantium, carried 100,000 spectators and featured many artefacts from all corners of the empire. These include an Egyptian obelisk and a bronze sculpture of three intertwined serpents from Delphi’s lifespan.
Hagia Sophia
Hagia Sophia is one of the most beautiful monuments you will se on the Istanbul city tour. It was built in the 6th century by Emperor Justinian, and was one of the largest basilicas in the Christian world. After the Ottoman conquest, it was converted into a mosque and today it is one of the most magnificent museums in the world. You can enjoy your time here admiring the beautiful Byzantine mosaics. (It is closed to the public on Fridays)
Topkapi Palace
Topkapi, is the largest and oldest palace in the world. It is the crown jewel of the Ottoman Empire. With its treasure and exotic buildings overlooking the Golden Horn. Your visit to Topkapi promises to be a truly fascinating experience. (it is closed to the public on Tuesdays)
Istanbul Grand Bazaar
The last stop of the Istanbul city tour is the Grand Bazaar. In operation since the 14th century, the Grand Bazaar is one of the largest covered markets in the world, with 58 streets and more than 4,000 shops. The bazaar is especially known for its jewellery, leather, pottery, spices, and rugs. (The Grand Bazar is closed on Sundays. The extra time will be spent at the other locations if your tour falls on a Sunday)
You will be satisfied at the end of your Istanbul city tour. Because Istanbul is a city so rich in history and culture, you will learn many things and be able to take many memories with you. Happy Holidays to all.
